The first team to call this ballpark home was the 1999 Scrappers which featured some of the best raw talent that Mahoning Valley would see. The sparkplug at the top of the lineup was Alex Requena who may have hit only .234 but had an On Base Percentage of .358. Getting on base was Alex’s #1 agenda as he had the amazing speed to turn any walk into a double, stealing 44 bases in 61 games (remember this is a Short-Season league and doesn‘t play its first game until June 21st). In the #3 hole waiting to drive him to 3rd or home with an RBI was Nate Grindell and his 20 2B, 5 HR, 47 RBI and .315 batting average. Down in the cleanup positions, Jorge Moreno (10 2B, 9 HR, .257) and Jewell Williams (9 2B, 8 HR, 42 RBI, .273) provided enough power to make this one of the most potent lineups in the NY Penn League. As if that wasn’t enough to drive this team to #1, the Scrappers would also feature not one but two future superstars.
