When the dust settled Andujar returned to the mound quite disgruntled, and put all
of his anger into the next pitch... a scoarching strike right down the pike.
Denkinger immediately called it a ball. Andujar proceeded to lose his mind and
broke off the mound in order to kill Denkinger and had to be restrained by 3 teammates.
Andujar would be suspended for the first 10 games of the following season
by the MLB for trying to kill an umpire. By the time the insanity was over
the score was an incredible 11-0 Royals in the 6th inning. As all the craziness
insued, Saberhagen simply pitched off his cloud... he was a new father, he was
pitching in game 7 of the World Series for a team that had never won a World Series
and he was the pitcher of record, he had an 11 run lead in the 6th inning,
he was pitching a shutout and of course, they had found Dane Iorg's nose. Saberhagen
would pitch the rest of the game not giving up a single run to the Cardinals
who were just a mess after seeing their champagne get covered up in plastic
wrap. The Royals would watch the final swing settle gently into Darryl Motley's
glove for the last out as Kansas City celebrated their first ever World Championship
on their own mound at Royals Stadium. The team went crazy pouncing on
each other with jubulation but this time, being careful to avoid Dane Iorg's nose.
To add to Saberhagen absolutely perfect world, he received the trophy for
World Series MVP. |
