The win was great but the Royals were still in a strange position. No one had ever come back from a 3 game to 1 deficit in the playoffs and then a 3 game to 1 deficit in the World Series. The one thing the Royals did have going for them however was the home field advantage as the series went back to Kansas City. The Cardinals gave the ball to Danny Cox for game 6 while Charlie Leibrandt was back in the drivers seat for the Royals. With the Cardinals looking to win the series as soon as possible Danny Cox pitched inning after inning not letting the Royals score a run. Leibrandt meanwhile countered with shutout innings as well. In the 4th inning, Frank White stole 2nd base but the umpire missed the call and called him out. Pat Sheridan then slammed a single to right field which would have easily scored the speedy White. Instead the shutout continued on both sides... through the 5th, and into the 6th... and into the 7th. Neither pitcher was willing to yield a run and it wasn't until the top of inning #8 that the Cardinals finally broke through with two outs. Terry Pendelton scored on a two out single by Brian Harper who pinch hit for the impressive Danny Cox. Ken Dayley took over and replaced Cox and pitched another scoreless inning. Leibrandt continued to pitch trying not to let the Cardinals score another run as the possible final game of the series, went to the bottom of the 9th with St. Louis holding on to a 1-0 lead.
