Royals Hall of Fame - Kauffman Stadium George Brett hit .259 in April getting off to a very slow start. Many thought it would be Brett's first off-season but he came back strong in May, hitting .329. His batting average climbed all the way to .301 before Brett caught fire the way no one had seen in 40 years as he hit an incredible .472 in 36 at bats before injuring himself and landing on the D.L. for a month. Batting .337 now on the season, Brett returned on July 10th and everyone expected him to start off slow as he rehabbed the injury. Obviously .472 was a bit much to expect from an injured player but Brett was absolutely incredible and actually exceeded that mark hitting a whopping .492 in July. On July 18th Brett began a 30 game hitting streak... a stretch where he would hit .467, and on August 26th George Brett went 5 for 5 against Milwaukee, as his batting average for the season peaked at .407. It seemed that Brett was on his way to becoming the first person since Ted Williams to hit .400. Unfortunately, Brett was in for a rough September and hit just .290 (...just .290. Most would be thrilled to ever hit .290). On September 19th, with only two weeks left to play, Brett was still hitting over .400, but he then went 4-27 dropping all the way down to .384. In the final week of the season, Brett would rebound hitting over .500 but it simply wasn't enough. Brett finished the season at .390... an incredible modern day accomplishment. |
