The town of Lexington is one of the smallest to host a professional team. With a population of only 5000 in 1956, Lexington led the league in "pre-season" season ticket sales with 540 purchased before the first pitch was thrown. The Boston Red Sox took a chance on this little community and named it their Class D franchise.
