The quality of play brought attention from Major League Baseball again as the Cardinals took the Hobbs Sports under their umbrella for the 1958 season. The team would be renamed the Hobbs Cardinals and play decent baseball playing just under .500 for the 1958 season and then finishing only one game under .500 to make the playoffs in 1959. The Alpine Cowboys would sweep the Cardinals in the first round ending their hopes of getting their second title. The Cardinals would pull out after the season. The vacancy would be filled by the Pirates who moved from Roswell's Fair Park Stadium to Hobbs' Bender Park.
