Jeff Reardon was really the reason for the Mets 1978 run. He would go 17-4 with a 2.54 ERA. He was joined by Neil Allen (5-9, 2.10) and John Pacella (4-3 2.63). Together they would make a run for the gold but lose the Championship in the finals. Hubie Brooks came back in 1979 and did much better, hitting 21 doubles and batting .260. Future superstar Cubs catcher Jody Davis hit 23 doubles, 21 HRs and batted .296. Tobacco chewing Wally Backman hit .282 with 23 SB, and Ronald MacDonald hit 16 homers (I know… I imagine it was a rough childhood for him).
