The reasons for the failure of professional baseball in 1950 were obvious. There was nobody in the stands. The Cubs drew only 34,000 fans all season long. That failure probably had a lot to do with the fact that the Springfield Cubs' new stadium was built on the cheap... no roof or protection from the sun, and it was built only a few blocks from the sewer treatment plant. After only 1 1/2 seasons, the brand new Memorial Baseball Stadium was taken out of service and never to be used again.
