Professional baseball had not been played in Springfield Missouri's city limits since 1950, when the Springfield Cubs played for the Class C Western Association at Memorial Baseball Stadium... a rather generic ballpark with no roof and just some bleachers. The ballpark only 2 1/2 years old was deemed a failure and the Cubs moved their Springfield franchise to Topeka the following season. Baseball was not to be seen again here in Springfield for 5 1/2 decades.
