Christensen Stadium is an old ballpark about to get a new life. With the all new and modern (and... much needed) Security Bank Ballpark debuting on the other side of "the loop" for the Double-A Midland Rockhounds, the switch-over for this stadium from former Texas League ballpark to a Collegiate Junior College ballpark has already begun. Sadly Christensen's classic magenta seating has been removed in favor of that more generic and lifeless dark green that we see today in most modern HOK stadiums. The infield and dirt replaced by an easier to maintain Astroturf field (thanks
to Bill and Leanne Vernal's 300k donation). The relentless Texas sun can be more than any grounds crew could handle... especially a Junior College who doesn't have the resources of a Texas League team or say an NCAA Division I franchise like the Longhorns, so the Astroturf makes complete sense in this location. Even more importantly... we could just as easily be sitting here lamenting the last days of a classic stadium before the wrecking ball. That would be a far worse fate to contend with.
