The ballpark that would one day become Holman Stadium @ Dodgertown had some very humble beginnings, right here at a former Florida U.S. Naval Airbase. Branch Rickey tried his best to find a spring home for his Dodgers... going as far as training for several years in Cuba and the Dominican Republic (more on that later). The problem was that, the Dodgers had some very special needs at this time... needs that verged believe or not on "life and death". After finding way too
many pitfalls in the Carribean, Rickey knew he had to find a place here in the United States to exist... but that "right place" had to fit some very unique and difficult needs. Those needs were in fact so "special"... that they outweighed the necessities of having an actual "proper ballpark" to play in.
