Jackie Robinson was ready to make his debut in the annals of sports history, but it wasn't going to be without some backlash... death threats (for Branch Rickey as well Jackie) were becoming quite common, and many believed that they would be acted upon if the situation presented itself. City officials had stopped Robinson from playing in many of the major Spring Training ballparks around the area including Deland and Sanford and except for Daytona, most of the currently standing Spring Training parks wouldn't allow Robinson to even take the field. Branch Rickey needed a place for Jackie to stay, eat and feel secure, but somehow never have to leave the complex... even when it was time to leave the complex. Rickey found the answer to nearly all of his solutions, here at Vero Beach.
