The reason for a new Double-A ballpark in Tennessee had much to do with what was going on in nearby Memphis. Memphis is one of the larger market cities in the United States and the Memphis Chicks had been playing for years in the Double-A sized Tim McCarver Stadium... a rather simple and not very interesting ballpark. McCarver Stadium had run its course and it was time for something special to happen to Memphis. In 1998, the Memphis Chicks were taken over by the St. Louis
Cardinals, becoming the "St. Louis Redbirds". The Cardinals takeover not only included a new stadium (Autozone Park), but a promotion to the Triple-A Pacific Coast League as well.
