In their first season at Municipal Stadium, the Greenville Braves came in 1st place (80-61) behind the pitching of Zane Smith (7-0 1.65). While they wouldn't win the playoffs, they had created an excitement for baseball within the city, as the new Greenville Braves drew 217,000. For the next 3 seasons, the Braves were mediocre on the field, finishing between 4th and 7th place. Paul Assenmacher led the team in 1985 going 6-0 with a 2.56 ERA. It was in 1986 however that the team would see its first superstar.
