There is some discrepancy as to when Crockett Park got its start in professional
baseball. The Hornets had been playing in the Piedmont League at Hayman Park when
this ballpark was completed in 1940. The Hornets didn't play here during the
season of its completion, and at the very least didn't start their history here
until 1941. Some books however have the team still playing in Hayman Park, until
the war ended in 1946. We tend to think it was probably a little of both. The
Hornets probably began playing here in 1941 while still maintaining Hayman Park
as its main base until they moved here permanently after WWII. |
