Prior to the Columbia Mets playing in this ballpark, the New York Mets' Single-A South Atlantic League Franchise had taken up residence at Veterans Field in Shelby North Carolina. The move here was indeed a special one for this community who as we had previously stated, not seen a professional ballgame here in 22 years. The fact that baseball had left this area for that long is a bit of a surprise considering the tremendous success that the Columbia Reds had here. Then again it is common for Minor League Baseball to forget about its
former successful markets (as it had in Pensacola and Mobile and Springfield Missouri, etc...) until an Independent League team comes along, has tremendous success and reminds the affiliated Minor Leagues what they were missing.
