Rick Woodward bought the team and decided that a Slag Pile was perhaps… not the best location for a baseball stadium. (Why was he the only one to come to that conclusion?). In 1910 he contacted Connie Mack and toured the ballparks of Forbes Field and Shibe Park … the stadiums for the Pittsburgh Pirates and Philadelphia Phillies. He then asked the Southeastern Engineering Company of Birmingham design team, to create a ballpark with the same sort of beauty and grandeur of these two facilities, but on a much smaller scale.
