State Mutual Stadium marks the first time that professional baseball has been played in this town since 1951 when the Georgia-Alabama League's Rome Red Sox called this area home. The Rome Red Sox played at the now long demolished Cole Stadium and though they were called the Red Sox, they were actually affiliates of the Washington Senators. The Red Sox only played for 2 seasons but Rome had a very rich previous Minor League baseball
     history serving the Georgia State League, the Georgia Alabama League, The Southeastern League and the Appalachian League from 1910-1921.
