In 1979, the Milwaukee Brewers took over the Butte Copper Kings and signed a PDC for 3 seasons. By the 3rd season, the Copper Kings were in first place under Manager Kenneth Richardson, and made the playoffs. In 2 games the Copper Kings took home their first Pioneer League Championship. The Brewers would pull out of Butte in 1983 and be replaced by the Kansas City Royals franchise. It was here that some real talent took to the field, when Cecil Fielder blasted 20 home runs and hit .322 in only 271 at bats. Fielder would go on to have a 50 homer year for the Detroit Tigers.
