The Gary Railcats are aptly named… since they spent their first season on the rails going from ballpark to ballpark. The Railcats came into existence in 2002, while their ballpark debuted in 2003, for the independent but hugely successful Northern League. The Railcats spent their first season as a road team. They didn't play any home games in the Northern Indiana region, despite having some attractive places to play (E.J. Block Stadium in East Chicago Indiana was used by the Mid-America League for one season).
