Sportman's Park first opened on Dodier Street in 1902... though it was a bit smaller than this... The original capacity was just 8,000. Sportsman's Park however was not built for the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cardinals had their own ballpark ... Robison Field (which had a capacity closer to 15,000 at the time). Though... holding only about half that amount, Sportsman's Park would soon grow much larger. The Cardinals franchise itself had been a part of St. Louis since the very beginnings of professional baseball... 1882. The Browns however didn't come into existence until 1902 when they moved here from Milwaukee, where they had played as the Milwaukee Brewers at Borchert Field. After finishing up their Spring Training at the West Baden Hotel and Hot Springs in French Lick Indiana, the St. Louis Browns became official on April 23rd 1902 and suddenly St. Louis had two professional baseball teams.
