The New York Jets would leave Shea Stadium in 1984. Their relationship with the Mets was tenuous at best. The Mets wouldn't let the Jets play at Shea most seasons, until the Mets schedule had come to an end... forcing the Jets to spend the beginning of every season on the road. With a choice of continuing to play here, or at a stadium named and hosted by a rival NFL team, they chose the latter. Giants Stadium had more seating and less restrictions. If Shea had actually gone through with their plans for an addition 35,000 seats, the Jets may have stayed but 56k was more than enough as far as the Mets were concerned.
