In 2006, after much debating and lobbying, both the New York Mets and the New York Yankees were awarded a new stadium agreement by the City of New York. As part of the agreement, both teams would stay right where they were and not move out of their respective neighborhood. The Yankees began to build Yankee Stadium III right next door to Yankee Stadium II, and the Mets began building Citi Field in Shea Stadium's parking lot. It was announced that both stadiums would debut in April of 2009.
