One reason for the change-over to the huge blue panels on the sides of Shea Stadium, was the wind factor. Willie Mays once called Shea Stadium the worst outfield in baseball for wind... and this was a guy who played at Candlestick Park for most of his career. The panels seemed to help restrict the airflow around the stadium. The seating was changed from wood to plastic. The rainbow of colors embedded in the plastic seating became much more pronounced, then the painted wood had been and Shea looked as lit up as a Christmas tree.
