In August 1987, Williamsport Bills Catcher Dave Bresnahan threw a potato over the 3rd baseman's head. After seeing a bright white object sailing into left field, Reading's runner at 3rd base naturally trotted home. He was quickly tagged out by Bresnahan with the real baseball.
Bresnahan never stood behind this plate again. That may be okay as, his .149 batting average will never be remembered as something special. His caper however, caused his #59 to be retired a year later. The fans of Williamsport and their team have continued to celebrate Bresnahan. On Bresnahan night... a ticket costs $1 and 1 potato.
