After years of trying to keep Minor League Baseball teams as far away from Major League teams as possible (to keep competition at a minimum), a modern trend has begun to move much of a parent club's Minor League system to just a stones throw from the Major League ballclub's stadium. The reason for this may have a lot to do with independent baseball leagues who donít have to follow the rules of the MLB. Working indepedently, they set up shop in the suburbs of many Major League cities. All of those Major League clubs who didnít want their Minor League farm system taking fans away from the parent club now feel it is better to at least "keep it in the family"... and have the farm system competing for fans rather than give it away to an independent team with whom they have no control. Very quickly teams like the Staten Island Yankees and the Brooklyn Cyclones (Mets) and the Aberdeen Ironbirds of Maryland (Orioles), the State College Spikes (Pirates) and the Mahoning Valley Scrappers (Indians) of Youngstown Ohio have been part of these big changes within the NY-Penn League.
