NY-Penn League
(Short Season Single-A)
Batavia would have some work to do to compete with the record they had put up the previous season. It was a lot to live up to. Somehow they managed to do it, putting up an almost identical record of 84-41 (.672)... and somehow they managed only a tie for 1st place as Jamestown put up an identical 84 win season. Future St. Louis Brown’s slugger Dick Kokos who set the all time doubles lead in 1945 now set his sights on the HR title and by season’s end, he had beaten Walt Chipple’s Clippers record of 18 by slamming 37 2Bs and 21 bombs while batting .344. He also led the league in RBIs with 114. Francis Konick put up the most wins going 16-7 with a 3.22 ERA. Olean put up a surprising fight in the 1st round taking 2 games but Batavia held strong and came back to win. There they met up with Jamestown who had put up an equally excellent season. Batavia however was still on a roll and came back to beat Jamestown 4 games to 2 to win their 2nd straight PONY League Championship. Attendance jumped 23k to 67,600.
