Batavia Clippers and Batavia Trojans

NY-Penn League
(Short Season Single-A)
As good as the Batavia Pirates were in 1963... was as bad (if not worse) as they were in 1964. Putting up an abhorrent record of 33-97 (.254) with two pitchers… Richard Voss and Thatch McLeod sharing 1-10 records. Amazingly this awful team would produce the best player yet to come from Batavia as future All-Star and owner of a future MLB no-hitter, Dock Ellis would go 6-7 with a 3.20 ERA at the age of 19. In the Pirates final season at Dwyer Stadium, Batavia put up a very mediocre 47-75 record despite featuring 2 time All-Star Woodie Fryman (3-1, 1.50), future 19 year MLB veteran Gene Garber (4-3, 3.50) and 3 time All-Star Pirates catcher Manny Sanguillen (.235). As the Pirates pulled out of Batavia and no affiliate coming to the rescue, Batavia went back to its roots, becoming a co-op team. They changed their name to the Batavia Trojans and somehow managed to play better baseball as an indy when the Trojans managed to attract two future big league managers.
