Despite its popularity, baseball remained an amateur sport here in Vancouver until the turn of the century. Lacrosse had been the big game here in Vancouver and was the sport that the city was willing to pay to see. Two local businessmen however named A.E. Tulk and W.D. Haywood, saw the financial possibilities that a professional baseball team could bring to Vancouver. In 1905 they erected a huge new stadium on Homer and Smithe that would be dubbed Recreation Park that would be utilized for professional Lacrosse and for the first time ever... another professional new endeavorů paid baseball.
