Witter Field Wisconsin Rapids Wisconsin Home of the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters Former home of the Wisconsin Rapids Twins Senators White Sox |
1964 brought some new blood to the new Twins... a 19 year old who would go on to
have the best overall performance by any player at Witter Field so far, as future
All-Star Chicago White Sox / Baltimore Orioles 15 year MLB veteran Pat Kelly
would hit .357 with 26 doubles and 16 homers, which would set the all time batting
average title here at Witter Field... a record that would never be broken.
Kelly's future All-Star career and longevity in the Major Leagues would make him
the most successful alumni of Witter Field so far. Joesph Christian (10 2B,
7 HRs, .325) also contributed with the bat, as did future Minnesota Twins Catcher
John Sevcik (14 2B, 4 HRs, .284), the 5th Major Leaguer produced from Witter
Field. Unfortunately, except for William Hansche's 10-7, 3.02 record and George
Talsma's 8-11, 2.74 performance, the rest of the pitching staff was abysmal as
the new Wisconsin Rapids Twins finished with a 50-71 record in 9th place. They
would try to right the ship the following season as the 1965 W.R. Twins finished
the year at 60-61, behind some terrific power hitting. Joseph Porrevecchio
(25 2Bs, 22 HRs, .281) took over 2nd place on Witter Field's all time homer list,
and John Oster (17 2Bs, 16 HRs, .280) was impressive as well. On the mound,
future Minnesota pitcher Danny Morris (16-8, 2.16) joined with DeLon Thomas (13-12,
2.30) and Curt Sauer (8-3, 2.63) to provide an excellent rotation. |
