The 1938 Carthage Pirates was an excellent team, led by Buzz Arlitt who was not only their manager, but also their best hitter. Arlitt hit .342 with 31 2Bs and 17 HRs... all of which led the team. (Bob Jansen also hit .342). William Davis backed him up hitting .332 with 25 2B and 14 HR. On the mound, Roman Dellar's 18-5 record and 3.29 ERA pushed the Carthage Pirates to the playoffs in their very first season, where they would face Fayetteville in the 1st round. It took 5 games but Carthage would come up victorious to take on Neosho who featured Bill Gill the most feared pitcher in the league (and a 20 game winner).
