Portsmouth teams of the past were infamous for making it to the playoffs every single year without bringing home a trophy (once having a 15 year stretch of post-season appearances with only 1 Championship). The new Tidewater Tides of Met Park would maintain that infamous tradition and take 1st place only to lose in the 1st round, perhaps bringing a "smile" to old Franklin D. Lawrence Stadium. In 1971, Mike Jorgensen (15 HR, 51 RBI, .342) would join with future All-Star Jim Bibby (15-6, 4.04) who would go onto stardom elsewhere winning 19 games for the Pirates in 1979. Future All-Star Buzz Capra (13-3, 2.19) would become an All-Star elsewhere with the Braves in 1974 when he posted a 16-8 with a Major League leading 2.28 ERA. Luckily the Mets held onto the best pitcher on the team and one of the greatest southpaws in Mets history, Jon Matlack (11-7, 3.97). Matlack's best season came in 1976 when he went 17-10, 2.95. Matlack, Jorgenson, Capra and Bibby would lead the Tides back to the playoffs only to lose this time, in the Finals. 12 year veteran John Milner also played excellent ball hitting 27 2B, 19 HR, 87 RBI, 13 SB and batting .290 helped the Mets return in 1972. Though the team didn't feature any future All-Stars... it would be this season they would finally break through and win Met Park's 1st Championship Trophy.
