International League
That is when the team seemed to start getting hot. They seemed to be chasing Syracuse all season long and were 11.5 games behind the SkyChiefs before a 6 game winning streak put them in 3rd. By August 10th, they had moved up to 2nd place but were still 8 out of Syracuse. That’s when things got exciting… after they were knocked out with a 17-3 loss by Pawtucket, they went into Syracuse knowing they had to win all 3 games if they were going to make a move. A 2-1 series win would simply keep them in 2nd place probably til season’s end. So they went into the Syracuse and somehow managed to sweep the 1st place team and edge closer. In the final game of the season, Jeff Manto’s 3 run blast finally put the Bisons securely in 1st place. In the 1st round of the playoffs, they would have to take on Syracuse all over again. The took the 1st two and called upon Travis Driscoll who was recently promoted from Akron after playing in Japan all season. Driscoll came in and shut down Syracuse as the Bisons swept Syracuse with a 6-0 victory. They would go on to take on the Durham Bulls in the International League finals and by game 4, they were deadlocked at 2 wins a piece. The Bisons had been here 5 times before and had lost every time until last year when they finally pulled it out. This time, they would call on Jason Jacome who was stunning pitching 8 innings of 1 run baseball as the Bisons won the Championship 3-1... their 2nd in a row for Buffalo’s Coca-Cola Field. A new series was added… a World Series which pitted the winners of the International League against the winners of the Pacific Coast League for the first time. The Bisons went to New Orleans to take on the Zephyrs. There they lost the series 3 games to 1. It was an unfortunate loss but it didn’t take away from the fact that they had won the "real" championship series. The new Triple-A World Series was discontinued after only 3 seasons and the International League championship that the Bisons won is recognized today as the only Championship pennant.
