The owner of the Knights was looking for a cheaper alternative to building a huge new ballpark in downtown Charlotte and found that cheaper alternative 14 miles south of the North Carolina / South Carolina border. There was plenty of cheap land in Ft. Mill South Carolina and the new team moved here in 1989 playing in yet another temporary stadium while the new one was being built next to it. The "cheaper alternative" would of course come back to haunt the Knights for obvious reasons. Charlotte fans don't quite like driving to South Carolina to watch their own home team, even if it is only 15 minutes away.
