In 1988, Sarasota began building a new modern ballpark for Spring Training and Minor League Baseball. By 1989, Ed Smith Stadium was completed and all professional baseball operations were moved to the new ballpark including the Chicago White Sox. The new ballpark had many of the new bells and whistles we were beginning to find in these new Spring Training super-stadiums, including huge modern clubhouses that mimiced what the players had back at home. It also had none of the charm of the former simple Payne Park.
