The Capitals would play in Springfield for 6 seasons, peaking 50,000 in attendance in 1998 and 1999. In 2001 a new opportunity presented itself again. A Midwest League Single-A Cubs franchise had abandoned their old ballpark in the northwest "Chicagolands" metro area.  It was too good of an opportunity to turn down. The Capitals packed their bags and moved north to Rockford Illinois.
