Professional baseball first came to Lafayette in 1955, 15 years after the ballpark opened. The Lafayette Chiefs joined the Midwest League, as the Class D (Single-A) affiliate of the Cleveland Indians. 61,000 fans flocked to Loeb Stadium to see the first incarnation of the Lafayette Chiefs in action.
