Located at the base of the Tampa football stadium, the 5,000 seat Al Lopez Field looked somewhat dwarfed in comparison to the 46,000 seat arena. Tampa Stadium however wouldn't be built until 1967, while Al Lopez Field was built in 1955 at a cost of just $288,000. Al Lopez Field would instantly become one of the key baseball stadiums in the state of Florida and secured Tampa's future as a home for both Spring Training and professional Florida State League baseball for the next few decades. Tampa's original Spring Training / Florida State League ballpark, Plant Stadium ... would soon be taken out of commission by the time the 1960's came around thanks to the quality of Al Lopez Field.
