McConnell Field was known in its first "official season" of 1939 as "Braves Field" a name it would carry until the war years began. When the ballpark was actually built is a question because it had previously been a semi-pro ballpark before the Class C Canadian-American League (Can-Am League) came calling in 1939. Some say it had been around awhile. In fact these bleacher portions of the grandstand had become known as "Splinter Haven" according to Michael Benson's "Ballparks of North America" during its inaugural 1939 season.
