There is perhaps no ballpark standing today, that more represents the grand era of the Eastern League. Though the Double-A League pulled out of here for good in 1972, Dunn Field would serve the E.L. for a total of 29 years from 1938-1955 and again from 1962-1972. Williamsport Pennsylvania’s "Historic Bowman Stadium" is the only other surviving stadium from the Eastern League’s pre-WWII era. Both stadiums are still very much in use today, with Bowman Stadium continuing to serve the Single-A NY Penn League (which Dunn Field spent plenty of time with as well), while Dunn Field has gone Summer Collegiate working with the NYCBL and most recently in 2011, the Perfect Game Collegiate Summer League… a new summer league designed by scouts to compete in the upper ranks of the NECBL, Northwoods and Coastal Plain Leagues. This new elite league features Elmira’s Dunn Field as its top star… after all, this ballpark has been host to so many future All-Stars and future Hall Of Famers over the past decades. The ballpark was built quickly in 1938 to replace it’s former self… Dunn Field I. (This ballpark is officially named Dunn Field II).  Dunn Field I was just a tiny little wooden facility, with a small central grandstand behind home plate and long bleachers down the lines. Dunn Field would burn to the ground in early 1938 while the Brooklyn Dodgers’ Elmira Pioneers tried to continue playing baseball in what was left of the ballpark. All the while, construction began on the new facility… this time made of strong concrete and steel. So strong in fact, that it is still in excellent shape today, some 70+ years later. We pick up in 1939, when this stadium hosted its first full season of professional baseball for the Elmira Pioneers… a name it had recently taken up and would go on to keep for almost all of its history (except for a few brief moments in 1970s. Luckily… it didn’t take). We present to you, one of the world’s greatest vintage ballparks… Dunn Field II, home of the Elmira Pioneers.
