In 1962, Savannah Georgia's Double-A White Sox franchise began to run into some serious trouble. Fighting over seating for black fans became riotous and the team literally fled to Lynchburg for safety. They played out the remainder of the season in Lynchburg and stayed for another 3 years. The White Sox moved their Double A in 1965 to Evansville, but didn't leave City Stadium. Instead, they put a High Single-A Carolina League team there in its place, and retained the Lynchburg White Sox name. The team has played for the Carolina League ever since.
