1978 saw C Jody Davis (24 2b, 16 HR) & 18 yr old 2B Wally Backman (42 SB .302) lead the Mets to their first Carolina League Championship. In '79 C Mike Fitzgerald (16 2B, 12 HR) replaced Davis, and Ron Gardenhire (.296) and Brian Giles (.299) replaced Backman. Darryl Strawberry came by in 1981 (22 2B, 13 HR .255 420AB) with Billy Beane (9 HR .268) and Doug Sisk (3-2 7 SV 3.25). Lloyd McClendon hit 18 HR in 1982 (.207), and Roger McDowell pitched 4 games (2-0 2.55). It was 1983 however when the Lynchburg Mets lit up the Carolina League and got their next championship.
