In 1992, the San Bernadino Spirit were playing at Fiscalini Field, when it was announced that a new ballpark would be built in Rancho Cucamonga for over $20 million. At the time, this was a tremendous amount of money to spend on a ballpark (though it is rather small by today's standards). The Spirit jumped at the chance to play in this new ballpark and moved in 1993 to Rancho Cucamonga, switching their affiliation from the Seattle Mariners to the San Diego Padres.
