Most baseball teams have found that they no longer wanted take the 2 hour ride down I-10 from Phoenix to Tucson. Because of this, several new ballparks have been built in and around the city of Phoenix including Goodyear, Mesa, Surprise, Glendale and the Mariscopa Pima Nation in Scottsdale. Two perfectly ready MLB stadiums located in Tucson ... Hi Corbett Field and Kino Park (which was only built in 1998) have because of this, been abandoned. What would happen to these
Arizona based MLB teams if they had to move Spring Training to Florida where every ballpark is minimum two hours apart? Kino did get some recent usage as a Triple-A stadium (getting the nod over Hi Corbett Field when both of these parks were available) by the Tucson Padres, but the Pacific Coast League has since relocated that team permanently to El Paso's Southwest University Park. Any chance of a permanent Tucson Triple-A team was hurt by attendance figures struggling to break the 200,000 range (which is not good for Triple-A).
