Horace Stoneham came up with his own brilliant idea. Instead of having the players train in a military barracks... why not go the luxury route and build an entire baseball complex with fancy hotels shaped like baseball caps, with first rate restaurants training fields and even swimming pools shaped like baseball bats. And... a crazy idea was born. Stoneham began building this complex in 1959 in the town of Casa Grande... about 30 miles due south of Scottsdale, Mesa and
Chandler. The complex is nearly always shown with the cloverleaf diamonds surrounding the famed crow's nest as seen so often in this photograph. So much so that many people (including us for quite a while) didn't realize that Francisco Grande actually had a proper 3000 seat stadium to play in on the grounds as well...
