World War II had just ended, and the Alabama State League was looking to pick up
where it had left off before it suspended operations in 1942. They set up 6 teams
for the 1946 season... Troy, Greenville, Brewton, Dothan, Ozark and here at
Hugh Owen Memorial Stadium in Geneva. Brewton and Geneva were the only two teams
to receive an affiliation as the Geneva Red Birds signed with the Boston Red
Sox. Under Boston's umbrella, Geneva had an excellent team and finished in 2nd
place during their inaugural season with a 69-61 record. They were led on the mound
by James Atkins who won 20 games while Hal Walther tied for the league lead
in homers with 17. |
