Because Leahy Bowl is a "drive in movie" styled stadium, there was no need for a large grandstand. Most people prefered to watch games from their cars. This is why when ballpark was built in 1948, a simple wooden grandstand was all that was needed for the Leahy Bowl, with a small concession stand and press box on top, and it has remained this way ever since.
