York Pennsylvania had a fairly rich baseball history. 5 ½ decades worth of professional
baseball in fact. Most of the teams went by the name, the York White Roses
before finally switching to the York Pirates in 1968. Nearby rival Lancaster
meanwhile took on the the name, the Red Roses. The White Roses and Red Roses may
sound like placid names for a ball club but there was nothing nice about this
rather flowery moniker. It instead, stood for the infamous and bloody battles
known as... the "War of the Roses". The civil war between the two towns of England
for the rights to the heir of throne, took place between the White Rose faction
of York England and the Red Rose faction of Lancaster England. While that
war is now over... both in England and over here... the York Revolution have again
taken on heated battles with their old foes... the Lancaster Barnstormers. |
