Phoenix Municipal Stadium II was built in 1964, to replace the aging Phoenix Municipal Stadium I. The original grandstand was a WPA like facility located at the edge of town on Central and Mohave. The new ballpark bearing the same name, would be built on East Van Buren and Galvin Parkway. The location is adjacent to Papago State Park. The red desert rocks and buttes of the park surround the outfield from left to center field creating a setting more akin to mars than earth.
