While pitching was always key to the Yankees winning, the 1981 team was led by hitting as Orestes Destrade (12 2B, 14 HR, .274) was the big star. Destrade would go on to play for the Yankees and Pirates before becoming a monster in Japan. Destrade would hit over 154 HRs in just 4 years in Japan, breaking the 40 HR mark twice. Destrade would come back to the U.S. to become a key player in the first pro seasons of the Florida Marlins. 21k came to the park to see the Paintsville Yankees win their 3rd straight Appy League Championship. In 1982, the Yanks slacked just a little bit and lost their title for the first time, finishing with an excellent 43-27 (.614) record in 2nd place. The talent however was amazing.
